Laos Sea Games 2009

The 25th Southeast Asian Games was held in Vientiane, Laos, in December 2009.

This was the first time Laos has ever held a Southeast Asian Games (Laos had previously declined hosting the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games citing financial difficulties). It has also commemorated the 50 years of the SEA Games .

Prior to the opening ceremony on the 9th of December,the men’s football events began on the 2nd of December . The Women’s football events began on the 4th of December , Water Polo events on the 5th together with both the Pencak Silat and the Table tennis events beggining on the 8th of December .

The first medal of the games was awarded to Singapore, when their Water Polo team won their 23rd consecutive water polo gold medal at the SEA Games during the round robin tournament round together with the Phillipines taking the silver medal and Indonesia taking the bronze.

Malaysia And Olympic Games

Malaysia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Malaysia has never participated in the Winter Olympic Games.

As the Federation of Malaya, the nation competed as Malaya (MAL) for the 1956 and 1960 Games. North Borneo sent an independent team to the 1956 Games, and Singapore had also competed at the Olympics from 1948 to 1960. After these British colonies formed an independent Malaysia in 1963, the nation competed under that name for the first time at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Singapore would subsequently regain independence from Malaysia in 1965 and compete once again as Singapore at the Olympics from 1968 onwards.
